School Streets in Brighton & Hove
We want to make the journey to and from school safer and pleasurable for everyone.
School Streets are designed to address issues on the roads around schools at drop off and pick up times, including congestion, illegal or unsafe parking immediately outside of school.
This can be done by encouraging more walking, cycling and scooting and restricting access to motor vehicles around schools during drop off and pick up times.
Why will we be using cameras to enforce the School Street restrictions?
Brighton & Hove City Council is strengthening its School Streets programme by introducing camera enforcement to improve safety during school drop-off and pick-up times.
The scheme previously relied on signage and volunteers, but this approach has proven difficult to sustain. Inconsistent enforcement has led to reduced compliance, with traffic returning at peak times and undermining the scheme’s safety benefits.
Camera enforcement will provide a more reliable, long-term solution. It removes reliance on volunteers, ensures consistent restrictions, and improves compliance, helping to keep roads outside schools safer.
The move aligns with Department for Transport guidance published in November 2024, which recommends camera enforcement for permanent School Streets and discourages long-term use of volunteers.
By adopting this approach, Brighton & Hove will deliver School Streets that are consistent, fair, and effective in protecting children and improving road safety.
How exemptions will work?
Restrictions apply during morning and afternoon times. Please see the specific school consultation page for more details. The restrictions will apply weekdays and term-time only. Approved enforcement cameras will be used to enforce the schemes.
Unauthorised vehicles are not permitted to enter during those hours.
Access would be permitted for:
- vehicles registered to an address on the street (including businesses and residents)
- Blue Badge holders needing to access a property on the street
- carers for vulnerable residents needing to access a property on the street
- emergency services vehicles on an emergency call
- utility providers on an emergency call
- Home to School contracted vehicles
Access may be permitted for:
- School staff (dependent on need)
- Hackney Carriages or Private Hires serving a property within the School Street (with proof of booking)
- Vehicles being driven by a person working at a business within the School Street
Requests for temporary access will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Reducing traffic provides a safer environment and more space for children and their families to make the school journey in a more sustainable way.
