Taxis & private hire wheelchair accessible vehicle consultation

We're seeking views from people who live or work in Brighton & Hove as part of a consultation on accessibility of our taxi and private hire fleet of wheelchair accessible taxis and we can improve the experience for wheelchair users, disabled passengers and passengers who have difficulties with mobility.

The survey covers taxis that are accessed via one of the city’s taxi ranks, hailed as they drive along or booked in advance through a private hire operator.

The survey closes on Sunday 24 November 2024.

Background

The council is responsible for how many licences are issued for 'hackney carriages' or taxis and what types of vehicles are used.

It's importance to have a mixed fleet of taxis as the best way to ensure transport is provided for passengers with mobility issues or disabled people, and aims to have approximately 50% of hackney carriages wheelchair accessible.

In 2022, the council carried out an 'unmet demand' survey which found that approximately 50% of the hackney carriage fleet in Brighton & Hove was wheelchair accessible and approximately 20% of the private hire fleet was wheelchair accessible, however many of these vehicles are only rarely used to carry wheelchair users.

Therefore, it would be helpful to have comments from users on their experience of using taxis and private hire vehicles within Brighton & Hove to understand what their needs and views are.
