Safer, Better Streets - Surrenden Road / Preston Drove

We’re looking to improve Surrenden Road at the junction with Preston Drove as part of our Safer, Better Streets programme.

Every year we assess requests for safety improvements all over the city, using our 'Safer, Better Streets’ assessment process.

The proposed improvements to the layout include:

  • Realigning and improving the existing informal pedestrian crossing on Surrenden Road
  • Widening the pavements, shortening the crossing distances
  • Moving the central island to a more suitable location
  • Adding an additional pedestrian island between the two southbound lanes
  • Widening and realigning the pavement on southern side of Preston Drove to enable safer crossing

Consultation Results

4 November 2024 - 18 November 2024

Thank you for participating in our consultation on the Surrenden Road/Preston Drove improvements.

The consultation received 82 responses from residents and stakeholders.

The responses indicate the majority of residents feel that the current layout of the road is unsafe and support the proposals presented in this consultation. The new pedestrian island and wider pavements are for the most part positively received by respondents.

Increased safety is felt to be the most significant benefit of the scheme, while concerns are centred around vehicle speed reduction along Surrenden Road, which is outside the scope of this junction improvement.
