Secondary school admission arrangements engagement exercise

We want to know what you think about possible changes to secondary school admission arrangements.

Please view the background information tab below to see the full information about this engagement exercise. There is a briefing paper and a PowerPoint presentation containing visuals of the illustrative models we are seeking views on.

These different models could help us develop a fair and inclusive education system where available school places align more closely with pupil numbers, which in turn will assist with budget sustainability.

Have your say

We are seeking views from pupils, parents, school staff and the community.

Your feedback is vital in helping us understand the potential impacts of the proposal and inform the decision making process.

Have your say until Wednesday 23 October.

Come along to an event

We’re also holding 4 public meetings which are open to everyone. Please book your place to let us know you're coming.

You're viewing real-time data. Participant counts are continuously updated for administrators. Please note that regular users see cached data, which may result in slight differences in the numbers.

Background information

29 September 2024 - 2 October 2024

Brighton & Hove is experiencing a drop in pupil numbers across the city, which is beginning to impact our secondary schools.

Please scroll down this page to see the detailed models. There is a briefing paper and a PowerPoint presentation containing visuals of the illustrative models we are seeking views on.

Alongside the decline in pupil admissions numbers, disadvantaged young people across the city are being outperformed by their peers, both in the city and nationally.

To address these issues, we need to review the number of pupils the city’s secondary schools take and the catchment areas where students attending our schools come from.

We cannot change admissions arrangements for church schools, academies and free schools as this is the responsibility of their governing boards. However, we are aiming to work closely with these schools throughout the process.

Three models

We have set out 3 different models of how catchment areas and admissions numbers can change to ensure each school can stay open. It is hoped that this will help tackle barriers to success that some schools face to deliver a high-quality education to all pupils.

You can read the the papers which set out the detail of the models in the attachments below (both in Word and PowerPoint and in PDF versions).
