School Streets: King's School and West Blatchington Primary

We’re proposing to install a School Streets scheme at King's School and West Blatchington Primary.

School Streets are designed to address issues on the roads around schools at drop off and pick up times, including congestion, illegal or unsafe parking immediately outside of school.

The timed restrictions will be in place from Monday to Friday 8am-9am and 2.30pm-3.30pm term time only.

More information

We've included further information about School Streets, including exemptions and enforcement, in the first phase of this project.

You can also see a plan and details of the proposals in the survey phase description and in the survey.

We want to know what you think

This survey is open until Monday 20 July.

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete. You can log in to Your Voice to automatically save your progress and return later to complete your submission.

School Streets information

What is a School Street?

School Streets are time limited restrictions that reduce vehicle access on certain roads outside schools during drop off and pick up times. More information can be found on the School Streets webpage.

How would enforcement work?

Cameras would monitor the road during the restricted times.

Drivers of vehicles without an exemption could be fined (also known as a Penalty Charge Notice) if they don’t follow the restrictions. The fine is £70, but it’s reduced to £35 if you pay within 21 days.

For the first six months, first time offenders will get a warning. Any further offences will result in a fine.

Who can enter a School Street?

Access would be permitted for:

  • vehicles registered to an address on the street (including businesses and residents)
  • Blue Badge holders needing to access a property on the street
  • carers for vulnerable residents needing to access a property on the street
  • emergency service vehicles on an emergency call
  • utility providers on an emergency call
  • Home to School contracted vehicles

Access may be permitted for:

  • school staff (dependent on need)
  • Hackney Carriages or Private Hires serving a property within the School Street (with proof of booking)
  • vehicles being driven by a person working at a business within the School Street

Requests for temporary access will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

How can I apply for an exemption?

Exemption applications will be made on our website and available for free.

We’ll share more information about how to register for an exemption with the school, parents and carers and local residents if the School Street is introduced.

Can deliveries still be made?

Deliveries should be made outside the restriction times, or drivers can park nearby and walk to make deliveries.

If my car is already parked inside the School Street when restrictions begin, can I drive out?

Yes. Vehicles parked within the street before the restrictions begin can leave during restricted times.

Would I receive penalty points on my driving licence if I enter a School Street during restrictions?

No. School Street enforcement is not linked to driving license penalty points.

Will my bins still be collected?

Yes. Council waste and recycling collections will be able to access a School Street.
