Safer, Better Streets - Newtown Road/Fonthill Road

We’re looking to improve the junction Fonthill Road and Newtown Road.

Following a redesign on the initial proposals for Fonthill Road at the junction with Newtown Road, we have developed a final design to improve this junction.

Originally the Fonthill Road Scheme was part of the Safer, Better Streets programme: every year we assess requests for safety improvements all over the city, using the agreed Safer, Better Streets assessment process.

Fonthill Road scheme was subsequently categorised as a high-risk site.

The main improvements are:

·        Closing the west arm of the junction to vehicle traffic, except cycles, creating a wide continuous footway for pedestrians and preventing rat running of vehicles into the industrial estate.

·        New green space with the addition of two trees on the road closure.

·        Upgrading the tactile paving on all pedestrian crossings

·        Adding a raised table over the whole junction to encourage vehicles to slow on approach and preventing rat running of vehicles into the industrial estate.

The survey is open until Friday 6 December 2024 and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

TRO (final chance to comment)

2 March 2025 - 7 April 2025

The Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) survey is the final chance to comment before changes to the road layout are made.

The Traffic Regulation Order will be open for comment from 7th March to 28th March.

TROs are the legal documents behind the rules of the road. They allow us to enforce traffic and parking restrictions.

We advertise proposals for new restrictions via a public notice. You can comment on the proposals during a 21-day period on our Traffic Regulation Order webpage. The reference number for the Newtown Road/Fonthill Road scheme is: TRO-5a-2025 and TRO-5b-2025.

If required, the council Cabinet member for Transport, Parking and Public Realm will then consider objections and comments of support. The Cabinet member will decide if the proposals should go ahead as they are, with changes, or not at all.

If the proposals are approved, the scheme will then proceed to construction.
