Safer, Better Streets - Newtown Road/Fonthill Road
We’re looking to improve the junction Fonthill Road and Newtown Road.
Following a redesign on the initial proposals for Fonthill Road at the junction with Newtown Road, we have developed a final design to improve this junction.
Originally the Fonthill Road Scheme was part of the Safer, Better Streets programme: every year we assess requests for safety improvements all over the city, using the agreed Safer, Better Streets assessment process.
Fonthill Road scheme was subsequently categorised as a high-risk site.
The main improvements are:
· Closing the west arm of the junction to vehicle traffic, except cycles, creating a wide continuous footway for pedestrians and preventing rat running of vehicles into the industrial estate.
· New green space with the addition of two trees on the road closure.
· Upgrading the tactile paving on all pedestrian crossings
· Adding a raised table over the whole junction to encourage vehicles to slow on approach and preventing rat running of vehicles into the industrial estate.
We want to hear your views
The survey is open until Friday 6 December 2024 and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
You can find more information about our Safer, Better Streets programme on the council website Safer, Better Streets webpage, including how you can request a safety improvement.

Information
The design aims to address safety issues with the current layout of the junction of Newtown Road and Fonthill Road.
We received requests to assess this site due to safety concerns and the proposed improvements will make the junction more functional, more accessible and safer for all users, particularly vulnerable users.
If approved, we anticipate construction will take place in 2025. We'll provide more detailed information closer to the work starting.
