Palmeira Square (north section) re-landscaping

We're working with the Friends of Palmeira Square and Adelaide Crescent on exciting plans to update the north section of Palmeira Square, often known locally as Floral Clock Gardens, with a contemporary landscaping and re-planting.

The concept we have in mind is heavily influenced by the original design, celebrates the area's heritage and reflects the architecture of nearby buildings and the stunning sea views.

It would include a sustainable, Mediterranean style planting scheme, with a focus on flowering pollinators. This reflects our changing climate, our coastal location and our commitment to supporting biodiversity.

We're also reviewing how the pathways and crossings connect.

Floral clock

The floral clock feature, which was installed to commemorate the late Queen’s coronation in 1953, is much loved, but the mechanism of the clock is no longer working. 

We know this is a popular feature, and we particularly want to hear your thoughts on this part of the garden as we co-create our plans with you. 

While financial constraints mean the council alone could not commit to mending and maintaining a working clock, we want the community who love and use the garden to help us come up with suggestions for what we might do with this part of the garden.  

Funding and volunteers

We've secured funding to cover the cost of the re-landscaping and volunteer gardeners from the Friends of Palmeira and Adelaide Residents Association have generously agreed to help the council maintain the new garden.
