More recycling, less waste
Thanks to you, recycling in Brighton & Hove has come a long way.
In 2025, we started collecting more materials in kerbside and communal recycling, including plastic pots, tubs and trays.
We’ve also rolled out food waste collections, and you’ve responded brilliantly. So far, you’ve helped keep more than 1,700 tonnes of food waste out of general rubbish, turning it into compost instead.
All of this means there’s now less waste going into general refuse bins. Because of that, emptying these bins every week may no longer be needed.
Brighton & Hove is one of the last councils to still collect kerbside refuse every week. More than 80% now collect general refuse every two weeks, and some only every three weeks.
But before any decision is made, we want to hear from you.

We'd like to understand:
- how you use your recycling bins
- how easy it is to recycle at home
- what might help you recycle more confidently
- how general waste levels have changed since we expanded recycling
Any change would only affect households with kerbside collections. Communal and flat collections would stay the same. There will be no changes to medical waste collections.
Who can take part
This survey is open to all residents in Brighton with rubbish or recycling collections from outside their home (known as kerbside collections).
