King Alfred regeneration project

We’re asking for your thoughts on the proposed designs for the new King Alfred Leisure Centre and improvements to the surrounding area.

We want to hear from everyone, whether you currently use the centre, are part of a sports club, live nearby or are simply interested in using the new facility in the future.

Your feedback is really important. It will help us understand how the proposals might affect people and guide the decisions we make next.

Why this change is being considered

The King Alfred Leisure Centre is an important place for sport and leisure in Brighton & Hove, and it's the biggest facility of its kind in the west of the city.

But the current building is outdated and expensive to run and maintain. That’s why we started a new project in 2022 to replace it with a modern facility that better meets today’s needs.

The proposal

After speaking with the public and looking at possible sites across the west of the city, Cabinet decided last year to build the new facility on part of the current seafront site.

We’ve now appointed Alliance Leisure to help lead the project. They’ve brought together a skilled team with the right experience to move things forward.

The team’s plans include building a new, modern leisure centre at the western end of the current site. They also want to improve the surrounding public space to create a welcoming destination for both residents and visitors, while making sure it fits in well with the local area.

Have your say

Please take our survey to share your views on the design proposals for the new King Alfred Leisure Centre and the regeneration of the surrounding area. The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Have your say until Sunday 2nd November.

In addition to the online survey, we're holding a series of in-person events which are open to everyone who'd like to attend.

Previous engagement

1 September 2025 23:00 - 1 October 2025 23:00

Since starting the project in late summer 2022, we’ve been working closely with local residents to hear their views on the King Alfred regeneration. This survey is part of the latest stage of that ongoing conversation.

Prior to this, there have been 3 key stages of engagement:

Stage 1 from September to December 2022

This stage focused on engaging with core users of the King Alfred. These groups included leaseholders at the current facility and sports clubs and community groups that regularly hire the facility

Stage 2 from January 2023

This stage expanded the engagement activities to connect with wider community groups and residents. This included an all-day drop-in event in April 2023, a ‘visioning workshop’ in May 2023, and specialist work with partners to engage with minoritised ethnic groups and younger people.

Stage 3 from the beginning of January 2024

This stage focused on capturing views about two alternative site options for the new facility: the existing site and council-owned green space at the land south of Sainsbury’s. In addition to hosting drop-in sessions views were captured through an online questionnaire which attracted over 3,600 responses.

Key messages from the 2024 survey

Whilst there was a diverse range of views about the location of the new facility, the responses to the survey showed a preference for the existing King Alfred site.

The feedback we received from the engagement also helped inform a number of key principles that will inform the design of the new facility. These are:

  • designing-in accessibility
  • designing-in inclusivity
  • embedding sustainability and supporting the council’s net zero ambitions
  • designing with maintenance and longevity in mind.

These are reflected in the current proposals, which will be shown alongside the questions once you begin the survey.
