Improving the Elder Place corridor
We’re asking for your views on our ideas and early designs to bring new life into the Elder Place corridor. This includes Elder Place, Providence Place and St Peter’s Street.
We want to make this area feel safer and more welcoming. By improving the Elder Place corridor, London Road will also become more attractive and enjoyable for everyone.
We know that the Elder Place corridor doesn’t feel safe or welcoming right now. There’s a lot of graffiti and antisocial behaviour, the pavements are narrow or missing and it’s not easy for everyone to get around. It’s also poorly lit and lacks greenery, which makes it feel run-down.
Our proposed 'concept plan'
We’ve prepared a 'concept plan' for the area which includes early ideas and draft designs. We’d love to hear what you think about our proposals.
We’d also like to know how you think the area could be improved and if you'd like to get involved.
Get involved and collaborate
We’re inviting residents and the local community to help shape the future of the Elder Place corridor at in-person engagement events.
Come along to a drop-in exhibition to meet our team, see the designs and ask any questions you might have.
Residents also have the opportunity to collaborate with us at co-design sessions to reimagine Providence Place Gardens and explore ideas for public art in the area.
We want the Elder Place corridor to work for everyone, so we’re holding two extra co-design sessions to hear from children and young people and people with protected characteristics. Their ideas will help shape the plan and guide future design choices.
If you, your business, or your organisation want to get involved in making positive changes in the area, email us at ElderPlaceCorridor@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

Phases
What you've told us so far
In February 2022, the London Road Local Action Team held an 'ideas day' to gather views on the area. The feedback from the event highlighted the need for improvements, with suggestions including:
- traffic reductions including closing the turning from Ann Street to Providence Place and reviewing the 'shared surface' outside St Bartholomew’s Church
- cycle improvements including dedicated cycle lanes and facilities
- wider and resurfaced footways with a continuous pavement
- more trees and planting
- new seating
- more street lighting
- more CCTV
- newly commissioned public art including interactive art that can be used by children
- space for a market area
- improving London Road Car Park and its external appearance through the introduction of new community facilities and uses
- more regular and thorough maintenance in the area
In July 2023, we held a 'community Walkabout' at the very start of the project, to give those living, working, and learning in the area the opportunity to share their views and suggestions on how to improve it .
We used the 'Place Game', developed by Project for Public Spaces, to gather feedback from the 24 people that attended the event. The Place Game outlines four key qualities of great public spaces:
- They're accessible
- People are engaged in activities in the area
- The space is comfortable and has a good image
- It's a sociable place (where people go to meet each other and where they take people when they come to visit)
The attendees rated the overall area as 'poor' on all of these four qualities. Providence Place Gardens was rated as 'average'. They made the following suggestions to improve the area:
- reducing traffic, and the speed of traffic, by introducing access restrictions from London Road and Ann Street and to prioritise the needs of pedestrians and cyclists
- cycle improvements including new cycle lanes, road markings, wayfinding signage and facilities
- pedestrian improvements including wider, resurfaced, and continuous footways new crossing point(s), step-free access to New England Street, wayfinding signage and more seating
- improving street lighting
- more CCTV
- more 'greening' including trees, planting and green walls
- more public art like entrance archways, an outdoor gallery and/or history panels
- redesigning the area to provide opportunities for events, food vans, pop-ups, cafes and other activities
- making the London Road Car Park more 'friendly', by improving its outside appearance - and by using some space inside for new uses and activities and for resident parking
- more street bins
- regular maintenance and enforcement including parking, fly-tipping and graffiti removal
- Providence Place Gardens improvements including flattening the mounds, removing 'hiding spots', removing broken equipment and creating space and opportunities for community events, activities and services
We're so grateful for the thoughts, comments and suggestions for the area so far. This feedback helped shape our ‘concept plan’, which are our preliminary designs for the area.
