Improving the safety of Chiltington Way

We’re proposing changes to Chiltington Way to improve safety.

These changes are based on concerns raised by local residents and parents and carers of schoolchildren.

Some of the issues include:

  • Drivers parking on the pavement or mounting the kerb when pedestrians are present.
  • Drivers reversing or driving along the pavement
  • Vehicles blocking driveways
  • Vehicles blocking emergency vehicle access to the school

Proposed changes to Chiltington Way

  • Chiltington Way would become one-way southbound from Effingham Close to Falmer Avenue (cyclists would still be able to travel in both directions)
  • Speed bumps would be added along the one-way section
  • Additional time-limited School Keep Clear road markings would be included to ensure Saltdean Primary’s emergency vehicle access is kept clear

Thank you for participating in the consultation on the proposed changes to Chiltington Way.

The consultation received 136 responses from residents and stakeholders. Of the responses received, 117 do not feel that Chiltington Way is currently safe for children at pick-up and drop-off times.

There were also a number of design suggestions, and as a result council officers have made some minor changes to the design. These changes include removing the proposed speed humps and adding corner buildouts at the junction of Chiltington Way and Falmer Avenue and the junction of Chiltington Way and Effingham Close. The corner buildouts will provide visual support for the roadway changes, help discourage and prevent motor vehicle users from blocking the crossings and parking on pavements and provide better and safer crossing opportunities for pedestrians in these locations.

Having reviewed the comments and feedback, and subsequently made alterations to the design, the council has determined that the proposal can now proceed to the next stage.
