Phases
Phase 1 background and survey
This background information will help you to understand the reasons for the proposal, the timelines and how you can participate in the consultation process.
Why this change is being considered
Brighton & Hove is experiencing declining school enrolment across the city, which has created significant challenges. School funding is directly linked to pupil numbers rather than providing a set amount per school, which has resulted in increasing budgetary pressures for Hove Park School. In response to these demographic changes, Hove Park School's maximum intake has previously been reduced to 180 students per year group.
The proposal
The council, with the support of Hove Park School, is proposing to consolidate all operations onto the Nevill Campus. This consolidation would require completion of necessary building work including additional classrooms and specialised facilities to ensure all students can be accommodated safely and effectively.
Key commitments
The school leadership, governors and council are firmly committed to maintaining Hove Park School's distinctive culture and ethos throughout this transition. They've pledged to preserve, and potentially enhance, the quality of education provided to all students. There is a strong commitment to ensuring that all current enrichment opportunities and experiences will continue to be available to students. The planning process will prioritise accommodating all students safely with appropriate specialised facilities that support the full curriculum.
The school leadership sees this consolidation as an exciting opportunity to improve operational efficiency while maintaining or enhancing educational quality. They're committed to a transparent consultation process to address any concerns from the school community and to ensure that the final plans reflect the needs and priorities of all stakeholders.
Timeline and next steps
The results of the consultation will be analysed and a decision will be made whether to proceed with the publication of a statutory notice proposing closure. This would then be followed by a 4 week period during which time further representations about the proposal could be made. If required, Cabinet will meet to consider the report and its recommendations.
How to participate
Online events and face-to-face consultation meetings are been scheduled. You can find details of these events linked. This will provide opportunities for all students, parents and carers and the community to share their views during the formal consultation process.
