Falmer Pond restoration project
Since 2023, we've worked with South Downs National Park Authority, local residents, Falmer Parish Council, and the Friends of Falmer Pond to develop plans to restore Falmer Pond.
Together, we’ve secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help deliver this project.
You can read more about the Falmer Pond Restoration Project on our website.
Share your views and feedback
In phase 1 of this project, we're looking to hear from you about your relationship and connection to Falmer Pond.
In phase 2, we'll share final design proposals and would like your feedback before we submit a planning application. This engagement is open to everyone, including residents, visitors and local organisations.
The proposals aim to:
- improve the pond’s historic setting
- improve water quality
- enhance wildlife and biodiversity
Next steps
Your feedback will help shape the final plans before the planning application is submitted in July 2026.

Phases
Pre-planning engagement
In this phase, we’re sharing our proposed designs for restoring Falmer Pond and asking for your feedback before we submit a planning application.
The proposals focus on improving water quality, supporting wildlife, and caring for the pond’s historic setting. We will continue to work closely with Falmer Parish Council to make sure the heritage of the area is protected.
What the plans include
- Removing built-up silt from the pond
- Repairing and improving the pond edges
- Rebuilding the water outfall
- Improving how surface water flows into and around the pond
- Planting vegetation to support wildlife
Earlier work in February 2026 included reducing some tree cover around the pond. This will help reduce leaf build-up, which can affect water quality.
Key documents
We have used several reports and assessments to shape the proposals. These can all be downloaded for you to review.
- The Hydreau report from 2019 found that erosion and leaf build-up have contributed to water loss and changes in water levels.
- The technical design plan shows the proposed layout and design of the restoration works.
- The archaeological desk-based assessment explains the historical importance of the site, which lies within a recognised archaeological area.
- The preliminary ecological assessment looks at how the proposals may affect wildlife and biodiversity.
