Expanding our electric vehicle charging network
We're already leading the way in electric vehicle charging and we're planning on expanding the network even further.
Whether you’re considering switching to an electric vehicle (EV) or already driving one, we want to hear about your experience to help inform our Electric Vehicle Charging Plan.
We're committed to cleaner air, quieter streets and a sustainable future. The transition to EVs is key to reducing carbon emissions and creating greener transport options.
Expanding the charging network
We have plans to install a minimum of 1,600 more chargepoints over the next three years and thousands more over the next 15 years.
This major investment in EV charging infrastructure, funded by government grants and private partnerships, will ensure better access to charging for residents, businesses and visitors.

Background information
The government has committed to ensuring all new cars and vans sold are electric by 2035. Transitioning from a petrol and diesel vehicle to an electric one is the most crucial step to improve local air quality and reduce carbon emissions from transport.
We installed the city's first public chargepoints in 2009 as part of a European initiative. Since then, we have secured various funding to trial different chargepoint technology.
When it comes to making the switch to an electric vehicle, being able to easily charge it is a key consideration. Our challenge is to provide public charging infrastructure for those who park their vehicles on roads where access to recharging is more limited. To accelerate uptake of electric vehicles, we're installing thousands more chargepoints across the city over the next 15 years, with the aim of reducing walking distance to these.
So far, over 500 chargepoints have been installed, which is the best coverage outside of London. These include:
- lamppost columns that can provide a steady charge overnight
- 'fast and rapids' for a quick top-up or a superfast charge when you’re short on time
We're interested in your thoughts on electric vehicles and any challenges you might face in charging your vehicle.
