Dyke Road / Upper North Street junction changes
Thank you for your feedback on the proposed changes to the junction of Dyke Road and Upper North Street in Brighton.
More information
After a review of the area, we're planning to remove the traffic lights and replace them with a new 'T' junction.
The lights are at the end of their useful life and need replacing but changes to traffic flow in the area mean they're not needed as much as they once were.
We'd also replace the signalised crossing with central islands which we think will make it easier for you to cross.
Removing the lights would also improve the reliability of bus travel times through the city centre.

Phases
Post-construction
Construction of the Dyke Road / Upper North Street junction improvement scheme has now been completed. The project involved removing the existing traffic signals and replacing them with a new T-junction, along with the installation of an additional pedestrian refuge island on Dyke Road. The removal of the traffic signals was intended to improve the reliability of bus journey times through the city centre.
Following feedback received during the consultation process, we also installed a new zebra crossing on Upper North Street and a vehicle-activated speed sign for southbound traffic on Dyke Road. In addition, we took the opportunity to enhance the area by resurfacing sections of footway and creating a new chalk grassland wildlife verge.
We will continue to monitor how the new junction operates. If you have any feedback or questions about the project, please contact us at transport.projects@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
