Dyke Road / Upper North Street junction changes

Thank you for your feedback on the proposed changes to the junction of Dyke Road and Upper North Street in Brighton.

More information

After a review of the area, we're planning to remove the traffic lights and replace them with a new 'T' junction.

The lights are at the end of their useful life and need replacing but changes to traffic flow in the area mean they're not needed as much as they once were.

We'd also replace the signalised crossing with central islands which we think will make it easier for you to cross.

Removing the lights would also improve the reliability of bus travel times through the city centre.

Questions and answers

18 July 2024 - 16 August 2024

Why are the lights being removed?

The lights are at the end of their useful life and need replacing. However, changes to traffic flow in the area mean they're not needed like they once were.

When would construction at the junction start?

We expect construction to start towards the end of 2024.

Are the signalised pedestrian crossings being removed?

Yes, we are replacing the signalised pedestrian crossings with three central islands, which we believe will make it easier for people to cross.

How will the roadworks be coordinated with other work in the area?

The changes are being proposed now as the traffic lights need replacing. We have avoided doing this at the same time as other works in the area, such as the Western Road, to minimise the impact on the road network, including when Dyke Road has been needed as a diversion route.

Is this project part of the St Pauls School Street project?

No, the work is additional to that underway for the School Streets project. You can find more information on the School Streets webpage.
