Have your say the dog fouling PSPO

We introduced a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in 2023 to make sure people clean up after their dogs in public spaces across the city.

This order expires on 19 October 2026, and we’re asking for your views on whether it should be renewed for another 3 years, until 19 October 2029.

What is this PSPO about?

This PSPO is a legal power that helps the council deal with problems caused by dog fouling in public places.

It means that anyone in charge of a dog must clean up after it and dispose of the waste properly if it fouls in a public space.

The current PSPO covers most public land in Brighton & Hove, except council-owned farmland and Forestry Commission land. The proposed update would include council-owned farmland as well.

Restricted areas

All public spaces in Brighton & Hove, except Forestry Commission land.

Failure to comply

Anyone in charge of a dog must pick up and properly dispose of their dog’s faeces. If they don't, they may receive a £100 fixed penalty notice.
