Compton Avenue / Buckingham Place junction improvements
There's an increased risk of serious injury and road traffic collisions between the seafront and Old Shoreham Road.
With funding from the Department for Transport, we're proposing improvements to the junction of Compton Avenue and Buckingham Place to make it safer for pedestrians and road users.
The proposed improvements include:
- Removing the centre road marking from Buckingham Place at Bath Street to Terminus Road at the Guildford Road and Trafalgar Street junction
- Widening the pavements on both sides of the Compton Avenue and Buckingham Place junction to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians
- Planting a new tree on the pavement on Compton Avenue near the cycle hangars
- Installing a ‘20 slow down’ vehicle activated sign on Terminus Road at the Howard Place junction
Have your say
Before we make any changes, we want to make sure we consider the views of local residents and businesses.
We're now asking for feedback on the proposal and for you to share your experiences of using the junction to help inform the final design.
Share your feedback on the proposals until Sunday 24 November 2024.
If you would like a paper copy of the survey or require additional assistance, please call 01273 294 808 and leave your address or email transport.projects@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

Thank you for participating in the consultation on the Compton Avenue/Buckingham Place junction improvements.
The consultation received 90 responses from residents and stakeholders.
· We received 52 comments about the scheme as a whole that were supportive of the suggested measures
· In addition, we received 15 comments about the pavement widening and road narrowing of Compton Avenue, which were supportive of the proposed new design
· We received 7 comments about tree planting and greening in the area as part of the scheme
Having reviewed the comments and feedback, council officers will review the design and make minor changes, including adding a tree and possibly a grass verge on the new, wider pavement subject to further feasibility research.
