Better Brighton & Hove fund
We're inviting residents to choose from a range of exciting ideas and projects to improve life in their wards.
Hundreds of ideas were submitted through the Better Brighton & Hove fund for suggesting how money raised from developer contributions should be spent to enhance council-owned spaces and community facilities across the city.
Almost £750,000 is available and we’re asking you to tell us how we should spend it!
Every ward in the city has at least £22,000 to spend
In wards where there has been more development, there is more money available. They are:
- Brunswick and Adelaide - £22,466
- Patcham and Hollingbury - £35,583
- Rottingdean and West Saltdean - £87,110
- West Hill and North Laine - £49,925
- Westdene and Hove Park - £90,898
- Wish - £76,125

How has the council got this money?
The money has been raised from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CILs) agreements made between the council and developers as part of the planning process.
Under the scheme, a percentage of the money raised from some new developments, such as homes, shops and student accommodation, can be used to improve amenities in the areas where building has taken place.
Choose your favourite ideas
In the first phase, more than 930 suggestions for neighbourhood improvements were submitted by others.
These ideas have now been looked at by your ward councillors and officers, and projects that met the fund’s criteria have been moved to the next phase.
You can now have your say by choosing the schemes you’d most like to see delivered in your area.

Share your ideas
In this stage, we’re looking for ideas and projects which could improve council run/owned spaces or projects, services, buildings and other infrastructure in your community. You may have an existing scheme in mind that could benefit from extra funding, or a new idea you’d like to get off the ground.
This could range from creating some street art or murals, providing a community allotment, to improving accessibility or supplying a defibrillator for community use.
All you have to do is log in, drop a pin on the map below and tell us about your idea by completing the short form. There is no limit to the number of ideas you can submit.
How do voluntary, community and faith groups apply?
Local groups who lease or hire facilities owned by the council that want to apply will need to complete the additional application form we've included below. You should then upload your completed application form when you add your pin to the map.
This is because these applications are likely to be for larger sums of money and may bring in funding from other sources including local fund raising.

We've prepared a schedule of costs for typical projects you might want to propose on streets or in parks and open spaces.
- New bus shelter = £10,000
- On street bike hanger = £5,000
- LGBTQ+ street markings to existing pedestrian crossing = £12,500
- New zebra crossing = £35,000
- Community allotment shed and industrial mower = £7,500
- New basketball hoop = £9,000
- Outdoor chess set = £5,000
- Outdoor table tennis table = £8,000
- New football pitch goalposts = £2,000
- Outdoor gym with up to 5 pieces of equipment = £20,000
- Multi-use games area = £75,000
- Disabled toilet in an existing council building = £20,000
- Publicly accessible bike repair station within an existing building = £1,750
- New weatherproof community noticeboard = £3,500
- CCTV cameras to deter anti social behaviour and fly tipping = £15,000
- New mural painted on an existing building = £10,000
- Cookery based project to support people with dementia and their carers understand food choices and cookery skills = £5,000
- Training and skills development course for 15 mothers of children under 5 looking to return to work after a career break = £5,000
But don’t worry if your idea isn’t on the list and you don’t know the likely cost as we will review them and either contact you for further information or let you know if your idea is likely to cost more than the funding available in your ward.
