A23 Patcham bus and active travel scheme
As part of our work to speed up bus journey times and to reduce congestion we’re planning to install a new bus and active travel scheme on A23 Patcham in spring 2025.
We’re now asking for your views and feedback on the plans.
More information
In 2022, we were awarded £28 million by the Department for Transport for our Bus Service Improvement Plan. The money is being used to improve bus services and provide lower fares across the city.
Funding has been provided to speed up buses.
This includes a new shared bus lane on the southbound side of the A23 Patcham between Brangwyn Crescent and Brangwyn Drive. As this part of the road is very wide, there wouldn’t be any need to reduce the number of traffic lanes.
The bus lane would operate 24 hours a day and could also be used by taxis and cyclists. It will be installed under a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

Phases
Advertise Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO)
The Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) survey is the final chance to comment before changes to the road layout are made.
Please note these dates are not the dates the TRO will be open for comment. We'll provide the exact dates closer to the time.
The TRO will be advertised from 25th April 2025 to 16th May 2025.
TROs are the legal documents behind the rules of the road. They allow us to enforce traffic and parking restrictions.
We advertise proposals for new restrictions via a public notice. You can comment on the proposals during a 21-day period on our Traffic Regulation Order webpage. The reference number for the A23 North ( Patcham) is TRO-07-2025.
If required, the council Cabinet member for Transport, Parking and Public Realm will then consider objections and comments of support. The Cabinet member will decide if the proposals should go ahead as they are, with changes, or not at all.
We'll share the results from the TRO consultation and any further updates.
