A23 Patcham bus and active travel scheme

As part of our work to speed up bus journey times and to reduce congestion we’re planning to install a new bus and active travel scheme on A23 Patcham in spring 2025.

We’re now asking for your views and feedback on the plans.

More information

In 2022, we were awarded £28 million by the Department for Transport for our Bus Service Improvement Plan. The money is being used to improve bus services and provide lower fares across the city.

Funding has been provided to speed up buses.

This includes a new shared bus lane on the southbound side of the A23 Patcham between Brangwyn Crescent and Brangwyn Drive. As this part of the road is very wide, there wouldn’t be any need to reduce the number of traffic lanes.

The bus lane would operate 24 hours a day and could also be used by taxis and cyclists. It will be installed under a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

Analysis of consultation results

10 September 2024 - 25 April 2025

Thank you for participating in our consultation on the A23 North (Patcham).

The consultation received 496 responses from residents and stakeholders.

  • Highest numbers of respondents live within the city but not in the immediate vicinity of the scheme proposals.
  • There was low interest in the scheme from people living within the direct vicinity of the scheme (4.2% of total respondents)
  • 43% of respondents commented on their concerns about being able to turn right into the Brangwyn Estate or onto the Old London Road and also the closure of the slip road. 25% of these thought that the scheme involved the banning of right turns altogether.
  • 18% of respondents expressed concern about the removal of the separate cycle lane to introduce a shared lane with buses, taxis and motorcycles which many said amounted to a reduction of safety for cyclists.
  • Around a quarter of all respondents made comments about the bus lane; stating it was too short, that not many buses use the route. Whereas some of these respondents thought the lane would speed up buses.
  • 18% of respondents thought that the scheme would increase traffic congestion.
  • 10.5% of all people thought that the money should be spent elsewhere eg on potholes and road surface or lower bus fare.

Having reviewed the comments and feedback, the project has now been approved to progress to TRO stage. Following this statutory process and cabinet approval officers will be working to procure a contractor; we anticipate this work will start Spring/Summer 2025.
